Therese A. Chevedden

From the Inland Northwest, Therese loves the outdoors. Since moving to the Bay Area in 2005, she's grateful for the spectrum of opportunities and ideas that comes with city life. In order to instill the feeling of a beautiful view, a calming landscape, or the wonder of perspective, she enjoys painting. Her color work is the starting point, and with every detail, she is determined to enliven an adventure for the viewer.

Therese has a BA in Visual Arts from University of San Francisco, and uses her multi-disciplinary skills for logo and graphic design, web design, photography, and is the co-founder of Mosswood Distillers with her husband Jake Chevedden.

Therese Chevedden paints and illustrates out of a sunlit garage in the Longfellow neighborhood of Oakland. Her studio shares tandem bike parking and a display of trophies for best Halloween costume on the block. Paintings from Therese’s latest series Updates from the Garage, were inspired by panoramas of American countryside seen during road trips with her husband Jake. For her long nights at work on this collection, Therese relied on sustenance from homemade veggie burritos, sips of Mosswood Whiskey and the security of a favorite pair of neon knee socks, which she claims not only promise good circulation but could provide illumination if the power were to go out. Therese’s work invites observers to switch focus from the scale of a small section to the relationship of colors in layers. In Updates from the Garage, we see pale mists of brightness and sharp winding outlines of color that represent a distilled consciousness, at once subject to gravity in drips and then refusing it by changing trajectory and contour. Therese’s collection not only offers us a conversation of ourselves in the world but offers an opportunity to seize more out of it; as we lose ourselves in the details, we feel timelessness and joy.
